Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten (4K)!

Classroom Photo

We are always looking forward to new students joining our Pre Kindergarten (4K) class. This pamphlet will help to answer some of your general questions, we are sure you may have more. The first few weeks will be a transition time for all of us. Please let us know if any questions or concerns do arise. We will be happy to take the time to meet with you at anytime.

Our Pre-Kindergarten (4K) class function is to prepare the children for a smooth transition into kindergarten. We strive to prepare each child academically, socially, and emotionally. Our desire is to meet each child's individual needs, while maintaining a consistent standard of learning for the entire classroom. We will work on a letter and sound of the week. We will also incorporate math, science, phonics, writing skills, art, and music into our daily lesson plans. The class will also work on number recognition, finger plays and cooking activities. Flexibility is the key to working with younger children. We will be changing our lesson plans whenever it is necessary to accommodate the children's behaviors or moods. We'd like to encourage the children to cut, paste, paint, and create their own art. As their skills improve their art projects will improve. Please do not be disappointed if they are not cut in perfect shapes. Preschoolers need to be able to do their own art without the teacher pre-cutting their project.

The children will learn through play, learning centers, and structured lessons. We are sure we will have a great year together. Please take the time to read the pamphlet, if you have any questions please contact any of us.

Hi my name is Becca and I am the Assistant Teacher in the 4K classroom. I grew up in Muskego with my mom and dad and two brothers (one older and one younger). I have always had a love for sports. I graduated from Muskego High School, class of 2014. I currently go to UW-Waukesha. After Waukesha, I hope to transfer to UW-Whitewater to become a special education teacher. I look forward to getting to know you and your children. :)

I have been teaching for over 20 years. My first experience with children was in the early 80's when I volunteered to teach preschool at church. I continued to work in childcare and preschool while I attended college. In 1993, I earned my Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I was a licensed teacher in WI and MN. While living in MN, I operated a group family childcare and preschool from my home. While living in WI, I have taught in some of the local schools. I started at Learning Edge in 2004 and enjoy working with children of all ages.

Things you will Need for the First Day!

Please make sure you have:

  • A change of clothes: shirt, bottoms, underwear, and socks. We will go outside at our playground time whenever possible. Please be sure your child will be comfortable to play in their clothes and shoes. Also make sure you have weather appropriate clothing.
  • Cot-sized blankets and small pillows can be left on their cot for naptime. All blankets must be taken home on Friday or on the last day your child attends to be washed. We have two cubbies for each full time student. One is located above their hooks. This one is for change of clothes and hats. Their other cubby is located by the door. They can put their personal belongings and art projects in these. Unfortunately, our hook space is limited so please refrain from backpacks and totes.
  • Please keep your emergency card up to date. If you change jobs, homes, phone numbers, or people allowed to pick up your child, let us know. We will get you a new card right away.

Please label everything with your child's name!!

About Pre-Kindergarten (4K)

Field Trips

Parents will be informed of field trips in advance through newsletters and permission slips sent home for each trip. Parents are encouraged to volunteer to chaperone. We would like to include as many parents throughout the year as possible.

Special Visits

We encouraged parents to take the time to visit. If you'd like to be a storyteller, help us with holiday parties, teach an art or craft project, or share with the children about your career, pets, or anything else, please let us know.

Learning Edge Childcare & Preschool provides a vast array of toys to play with here. Please do not bring any toys from home as this causes jealousy and fighting among the children. A special small pillow, blanket, or stuffed animal may be brought for naptime.

Meals and Snacks

Learning Edge Childcare & Preschool furnishes breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Please do not bring snacks unless you bring enough to share with everyone. You may bring special treats for birthdays. Please ask us for our attendance count for the day you will be bringing them.

Illness, Vacation, and Early Pickups

Please inform us in the classroom if you know your child will be gone. This information helps us in lesson planning, art preparations, etc. This also helps us in aiding the kitchen in the food preparation counts. Just drop us a note, call us, or tell us when you're in. Non-parental pickups will require a note from you, unless the person is listed on your emergency card.

Discipline in Pre-Kindergarten (4K)

Acceptable behavior will be encouraged, by giving positive verbal rewards. This reinforces a child's good feeling about their behavior and serves as an example to the children to act in such a way to receive this praise. Asking a child to stop and think about their behavior enables the child to work at self-control. Depending on the situation, one or two warnings are usually given and the child reminded of acceptable behavior. The next step would be a timeout. This timeout is not punishment, but rather a time when the child may calm down. If timeouts are not effective, some sort of consequence will be imposed.
